Tracing and Filtering Unsupported Biomedical Extractions in a 55.5-Million-Relation Corpus

ABSTRACT:
We audit 55,545,265 automatically extracted biomedical relations in HCC v1.0 and test a lexical rejection rule using archived inputs. A source-standardized analysis reduces the apparent 2019-2020 unspecified-study increase from 22.13 to 1.92 percentage points. After an initial temporal diagnostic, we select 1,000 new documents. Inputs are recovered for 1,012 of 1,030 documents including discovery cases. Among 299 recovered pre-2019 holdout inputs, none contains the tested COVID-family terms, yet the released outputs contain 380 explicit COVID-family rows; the rule rejects all 380. Retained-checkpoint replay matches complete released tuples for 62 of 70 new documents and produces 51 COVID-family rows from 30 temporal inputs. General-stratum row retention ranges from 77.2% to 86.3%; one of 829 deliberately mismatched-input controls passes. In the post-2020 comparison, 56 of 529 assessed COVID-labelled rows also lack the tested term family in their archived inputs. These experiments localize unsupported generation in inspected cases and quantify an abstention mechanism with material loss of coverage. Lexical retention is not semantic accuracy or clinical validation. Independent human annotation remains outstanding, and public reproducibility of input-level replay is limited by undistributed source passages and model weights.
