What the news says is happening

The money arrived all at once. ElevenLabs raised a $500m Series D led by Sequoia in February 2026 at an $11bn valuation — roughly a third of every dollar ever disclosed in this category, in one round. DeepL, working the translation end of the same problem, is past $400m raised at a valuation above €1.7bn. Even the small end moved: Resemble AI closed a $13m strategic round and used it to open in Saudi Arabia.

What that money is buying is distribution, not research. DeepL spent the spring shipping into the AWS Marketplace. ElevenLabs spent it opening in India, where it has said it wants $100m of revenue and a hundred staff — an unusual thing to announce unless the model work is considered settled and the race is now for enterprise seats.

The reviews tell a second, less flattering story. Speechify, which sells to consumers, holds 4.7 on Trustpilot across 6,591 reviews. ElevenLabs, the technical benchmark of the category, sits at 3.1 — and Voicemod at 1.8. The complaints are rarely about the voices; they are about subscriptions, credits and cancellation. This is a category that has solved sounding human and has not yet solved being easy to buy from.

Reddit is where the tools are actually adopted. ElevenLabs alone appears in 8,382 dated mentions across 88 subreddits, and the loudest threads are not in AI forums at all — they are in r/ChatGPT, inside the tool-stacks that people building short films post about. The distribution these companies are buying with venture money, some of them already had.
